literacy, the means of de-tribalizing himself, of 
becoming progressively less deeply involved in all 
situations. In literate societies, most people are 
unconsciously involved in the attitudes of 
detachment. They are apt to be aware of the 
assumptions and structures of all societies, save 
their own.
